look what's inside craft...

You know what hits newsstands today? Volume 7 of Craft magazine!

And you know what you'll find inside it? A little ad with my Black Forest quilt!

I bought a little ad space within a larger double page ad for Etsy.com and I wish so much I could see the ad in real life, but they don't sell Craft in Germany. But I know that many of you in the US of A will be able to hit your newsstands today to buy a copy of my ad! Plus you'll get a fabulous copy of the very cool Craft magazine along with it!

shop announcement: now is the time to buy!

So...it's tax time. And this past week I updated all of my shop records. And, unfortunately, I found that my dear little shop isn't quite making the profit I hoped it would. I'll be doing some price adjustments to most of my items. And, unfortunately, that means prices are going to go up a bit.

But...I won't be changing anything until Saturday, March 1st. That means that now is the best time to buy!

And...between today and the end of February, to further encourage you to buy, I'm offering a special discount to everyone who reads my blog! Get 10% off my current prices through Friday, February 29th! Simply enter in the code blog10 in the "note to seller" section during checkout and then wait for me to send you a revised invoice before paying.

But...guess what? I've got a lot of new items ready to go up in the shop! But they won't be listed until March 1st!

So, go shop now! And come back on March 1st for some new, great items!!

as seen on...

I've been noticed around the World Wide Web this week!

You can see reports on my Story of Quilts article on boing boing: a directory of wonderful things and on the craft zine for Craft magazine! I'm honored to have been noticed by such widely read blogs!

A blog not so widely read but deserving of your attention is The Art of Craft who has interviewed me for their weekly feature! This is a great blog for anyone involved in the craft world. They are not only supportive advocates for handmade but they also share their own observations and experiences in the handmade world. (I'm also their featured Etsy shop on their MySpace page.)

This cozy red knit scarf is from the shop behind The Art of Craft: Q Branch Ltd.

favorite shop friday: baby anne quilts

Every Friday I'd like to spotlight a different Etsy shop that I love. And there are a lot! I'm constantly finding incredible shops on Etsy that I can't wait to share with you!

For my first shop spotlight, I figured I'd better let you know about my own: baby anne quilts!

I create baby, toddler and doll quilts that are machine-pieced and hand-quilted. It's taking the time to hand-quilt my blankets that is my favorite part of the quilt-making process and I love the hand-touched quality it gives my work.

Opening up baby anne quilts has given me the opportunity to start designing my own patterns which has been a lot of fun!

But most of all, I love the idea that I am not just creating something beautiful to looked at, but also something to be used and loved, something that can become part of a family's history.

baby anne quilts

I began quilting about 3 years ago. I can't pinpoint the moment when I decided to try to quilt. As an art historian, I began to be drawn to the history of quilts. I found them fascinating: blankets are used every day by all economic and social levels and the craft of quilting turned this ordinary object into a work of art with powerful symbolic meaning.

So, when Karl asked me what I wanted for Christmas in 2004, I told him I wanted a sewing machine. And in January 2005, with the help of a how-to book from JoAnn's, I taught myself how to quilt. It took six months to finish my first quilt and I was actually surprised how much I enjoyed the process (once I figured out each step). But still, I didn't expect I would ever make another one. But when my brother-in-law suddenly got engaged...I was suddenly picking out a quilt pattern for a wedding gift!

My very first quilt Ever!!
My very first quilt!!

Nearly three years later, Karl and I are living in Germany and I found myself with a lot of time on my hands. When we moved here a year ago, I planned to do a lot of quilting with my extra time, but when I discovered Etsy a few months later, I realized I could do a lot more with my quilt hobby! After a couple of months of emails, a phone interview, and some fees, I got a new visa in my passport giving me permission to own a little online business...
